Hi, could you introduce yourself?

My name is Amethyst Farrar and I am a tech enthusiast and founder of Amethyst The Gem. I love all things tech, from IoT and AI to software development and cyber security. I have spent the last seven years of my career as a techie, and I have loved every aspect of it. In my years of experience, I have had the opportunity to work in network administration, technical consulting, and software development.

In 2020, I graduated with a BBA in Management Information Systems, I launched my Tech Talk series, and started a tech e-commerce business. I am excited to begin this new journey in my career. When I am not consumed by technology, I enjoy sharing uplifting and motivating content on my Amethyst_TheGem Instagram page. I share stories, advice, and tips based on my life experiences.

"After seeing so many success stories about women in tech I knew it was possible"

-Gianina Skarlett,
frontend engineer

How did you get into your current field?

As a child, I watched my mother work in tech as a tech sales agent and computer support technician. My mother was always getting the latest tech gadgets. So, at an early age, I was intrigued by technology. Whenever there was a software or hardware problem, I was running to fix it. However, by the time I reached high school, I would not have guessed I would be working in tech.

In 2010, I started undergrad at the University of Houston. As a freshman, I had no clue where I was going to take my career. Months later I chose the college of technology because it fit me. After learning more about the tech industry, it was a natural choice. However, it was not until I started working as a tech professional that I really discovered that tech was for me. I woke up every day excited to go to work. I never experienced that before. I have had the opportunity to work in different tech roles throughout my career and I am so excited to see which new roles I take on next.

What are your goals?

At Amethyst The Gem, my goal is to share resources, connections, and advice with those who are in tech and those who want to join tech. I did not have an easy journey in my tech career. I graduated college 10 years after high school, I battled aggressive bone tumors for over 5 years, and battled depression half of my life. Yet through all the obstacles, I never gave up. So, my goal is to encourage people to never give up on theirs.

Many people are looking for a way to join the tech industry and not sure where to start. I want to be the liaison for them. I started my tech career without a college degree. I taught myself skills for advancement, joined network organizations, and I worked tirelessly to get to where I am in my career. And now I am helping others do it as well.

Do you have a mentor? Do you mentor anyone?

Although I do not have a specific mentor, there are many people I have met throughout my life that has encouraged me in my career. Currently, I am not mentoring anyone specifically. However, I hope to launch a mentorship program through Amethyst The Gem next year. In the meantime, if anyone has any questions or needs any resources please contact me on Instagram or Facebook.

What tips would you give to someone wanting to break into tech?

1.    Decide on the tech field

2.    Research and study

3.    Never give up

The first step is to decide what tech field you are most interested in and start there. The tech industry is huge. There are many fields such as the cloud, systems support, machine learning, data science, software development, database administration, and so much more. You must be intentional and decide where you want to begin your career.

The next step is to research the job description and find out what companies are looking for in a candidate. There is no wrong way to join tech, only the right way, and the right way is your way. Use your past experiences, resources, and network to land the career you want. There are many avenues to get in tech, find an avenue that is best for you, and work with what you have. Research what skills are needed and search for ways to best obtain them and then study those skills. Self-learning displays passion and dedication.

The last and most important step is to never give up. If there is one thing my experience has taught me, it is perseverance. I am excelling in tech because I am intentional, determined, and motivated to keep going. Life always has a way of displaying hurdles, but it is how you get over them that determine your success. As the late and great Nipsey Hussle would say, “The Marathon Continues.”

What could the big tech companies do better to foster female talent?

Hire more women. Women have proven to be successful in building tech companies. We are talented, innovative, and qualified leaders. Big tech companies should also promote more diversity in tech. Awareness is key. People need to know women in tech are exceptional and we are here to stay.

How to create a good startup culture?

Building effective relationships create a good startup culture. In my Tech Talk series, I discussed the importance of networking and building relationships. Sometimes it is not what you know but who you know, and relationships go a long way in tech.

Who do you follow? What blogs do you read?

I enjoy following and reading about the latest news related to all things tech. Two of my favorite blogs to read are anitab.org and womenwhocode.com. I love hearing about the great things women are doing in tech and AnitaB and Women Who Code are extraordinary organizations bringing diversity to life.

What is the best way to keep up to date with what you’re doing?

The best way to keep up with what I am doing is to connect with me on social media. I created a LIT (Life In Tech) Facebook group exclusively for techies. So join the group and connect with the most incredible and supportive Techpreneurs.
