Hi, Could you introduce yourself?
Hi, I am Cristina Magro and I am an Executive Coach, specialised in working with STEM, IT, and Cybersecurity professionals and teams. I am Italian, but I have been living in the UK for the past 11 years.
I have been passionate about computers since I was little. I remember that when I finally got my very first machine, I dismantled it to change the graphics card and play my favourite games!
I have a varied background in marketing, sales, leadership development, and I found my way back to tech just by chance.
I have been working for a world-leading cybersecurity training company for the past 3 years, and they gave me the precious opportunity to study for two cybersecurity certifications.
I was hooked, and I fell in love with the industry and its people.
What are you working on?
There is still a big skills gap within cybersecurity, and companies are struggling to recruit, develop and retain talent.
To respond to these needs, in January 2020 I decided to start my own Consultancy and Coaching company. I help build strong and resilient cybersecurity teams by coaching cybersecurity professionals on their career/personal development choices, as well as on any other work/performance-related goals they want to reach.
As a result, employees are more focussed, motivated and have the tools to cope with their highly stressful jobs.
At the same time, I am refining my skills to be even more effective, by completing an MA in Coaching and Mentoring at Oxford Brookes University.
How did you get into cybersecurity?
I was headhunted! Never underestimate the power of a good LinkedIn presence!
What are your goals?
I recently became a #SheLeadsTech Ambassador so my mission is to promote diversity and inclusion within the tech industry. I hope to work with women and help them be themselves and thrive in industries where they are still considered an anomaly.
My goal as a person is to have a positive impact on the people I meet.
My goal as a coach is to become "useless," because that means that my clients have acquired the tools and the confidence to achieve everything on their own.
What’s the best way to keep up to date with what you’re doing?
My website cristinamagro.com will be ready soon! In the meantime, you can find me on Linkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/cristinamagr0/ , Instagram @cri_mag, or send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
What tips would you give to someone wanting to break into tech?
Technology is such a wide industry, so "breaking into tech" can feel like an overwhelming goal.
My main tip is to narrow it down first:
- What do you really enjoy about tech?
- Write down your goals, your values, your existing strengths.
Once you have a clearer idea of what you want, the fun part can start: gather information, network with people in the field and acquire those skills missing from you "toolbox" that are needed to land that perfect role.
I find that people often skip the first part, however, how can you get somewhere if you don't know where you are going? :)
Thanks Cristina keep up the great work
