Hi, could you introduce yourself?
My name is Nicole Young. I am a self taught designer and developer. I work as a freelancer doing design, development and other digital services such as marketing, content creation and social media.
How did you get into your current field?
I got into tech after moving back home after teaching in Asia for a year. I needed to build up my savings and found an opportunity with a new startup. I was able to learn and grow with the company as it expanded and was introduced to coding and the vast amount of opportunities available while there. It completely changed the direction of my life and I’m so grateful.
What are your goals?
My goals are to expand my business and personal brand so that I can help as many people as possible get into tech to take advantage of the opportunities available. My mission is to help diversify tech by helping to break down the barriers that many women and people of color face when trying to enter the tech industry. I have many relationships and role models that provide informal mentorship. Nothing official yet, although that will probably need to change soon.
Do you have a mentor?
I would say that through my platforms I currently act as an informal mentor to a few people. I love to be the person that others go to for advice and motivation while they are learning. I am currently working on ways that I can do that in a more formal way.
What tips would you give to someone wanting to break into tech?
Take the leap! Do it now! There are so many opportunities available in tech and because tech skills are in such high demand, learning a tech skill can have a huge impact on your life in so many ways.
Who do you follow? What blogs do you read?
I like to stay in touch with websites that celebrate web design like dribbble and awwwards. It's so inspiring to see how people are pushing the limits with the things that they create.
What’s the best way to keep up to date with what you’re doing?
I stay active on my youtube channel and instagram @nicole.young. I post on both weekly and am easy to reach through messaging on those platforms!
TechTwoX is here to celebrate women in Tech.
